The Spring Mountain District

Above Napa Valley on the Eastern slope of Mayacamas Mountain that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley, this distinctive area is known for “creating the mystique of mountain grapes”. Spring Mountain District became an AVA (American Viticulture Area) in 1993, and this is a place of individuals, independent people with passion and fearlessness. The memory of driving the steep winding hill road when I first visited Cain Vineyard is still fresh in my mind, not for the faint hearted. Spring Mountain District has just 30 vineyard/wineries. With its remote location and limited space, the region produces wine of unmistakable intense flavor and delicate, balance tannins that are now signature to Spring Mountain wines. Here are two wines that have been gently ageing and ready to be savoured. Although it wouldn’t hurt to slumber a little longer for a few more years.

Vineyard 7

2004 Vineyard 7&8 “7 ” Cabernet Sauvignon,
Spring Mountain, Napa Valley

The 2004 has matured into a beautiful, seamless wine, very much Old World in style, maintaining a beautiful acidity, a very smooth, velvety well-integrated tannin structure, and a medium-long finish. There are no hard edges on the wine which is seamless across the palate. The wine is showing profound notes of graphite-infused crème de cassis, eucalyptus, mint, cedar wood and finely-integrated oak. The promising structure of the Cabernet leads us to think it should continue to age well for another decade or longer. Drinking beautifully now.

“Spring mountain Cabs typically are hard in youth, but not this one…the tannins are here….but so finely grained you can drink the wine tonight….ripe cassis and oak flavors; what’s distinctive about thisCab is its dignified balance and finesse.” 92 points Wine Enthusiast.

Cain Five 2010

2010 Cain Five, Spring Mountain, Napa Valley

58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbac.
This vintage is dense and concentrated without being heavy. It is probably the most tightly wound Cain Five since the 1994. The key point is that even though it will easily last another twenty years, you can drink it today, with some patience in the glass/decanter. Everything is in place; with its perfume and satin-smooth mouth feel. You’re sure to recognise the unmistakable signature of flowers, berries, herbs, tar – all layered on the lovely earthy background. An exotic wine, quite unlike the big sweet Napa Cabs.

“This vintage has a gorgeous texture of velvet surrounded by dark fruit, fresh herbs and earth. A wine with a potential to age/evolve over the next decade. Best after 2017”
